Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus. It can cause pain and heavy periods, and in some people it makes conceiving harder.

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other places, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the tissue around them. Each month this tissue can react to hormones the way the womb lining does, which may cause pain, heavy or painful periods, and sometimes difficulty conceiving.

How it affects fertility

Not everyone with endometriosis has trouble getting pregnant, but it can lower fertility, for example by causing scarring or affecting the ovaries. Treatments range from medication and surgery to assisted reproduction such as IVF, depending on how severe it is and your wider situation. A doctor can advise what fits your case.
